(Chem.) A gaseous hydrocarbon,
C2H6, forming a constituent of ordinary
illuminating gas. It is the second member of the paraffin series, and
its most important derivatives are common alcohol, aldehyde, ether,
and acetic acid. Called also dimethyl.
