Definition of Poliphemus
Polyphemus, in Homeric legend a son of Neptune, the most celebrated
of the Cyclops, a huge monster with one eye, who dwelt in Sicily in a
cave near Ætna, and whose eye, after making him drunk, Ulysses burnt out,
lest he should circumvent him and devour him, as he had done some of his
companions.

(Zoöl.) A very large American moth (Telea
polyphemus) belonging to the Silkworm family
(Bombycidæ). Its larva, which is very large, bright
green, with silvery tubercles, and with oblique white stripes on the
sides, feeds on the oak, chestnut, willow, cherry, apple, and other
trees. It produces a large amount of strong silk. Called also
American silkworm.
