Definition of Prosapagnosia
{{En}}
- A form of visual agnosia characterised by difficulty with face recognition despite intact low-level visual processing. There are two forms: acquired prosopagnosia and developmental (also called congenital) prosopagnosia. Acquired prosopagnosia is usually the result of damage to the occipital and/or temporal cortex, especially to the right hemisphere. In developmental prosopagnosia, mechanisms carrying out face recognition do not develop normally. There appear to be a number of developmental difficulties that can produce developmental prosopagnosia including genetic conditions and compromised low-level visual processing early in life.
