numbness, torpor, Gr. &?;&?;&?;&?;&?;: cf. F.
narcéïne.] (Chem.) An alkaloid found
in small quantities in opium, and extracted as a white crystalline
substance of a bitter astringent taste. It is a narcotic. Called also
narceia.
