FRIDAY-FACE. A dismal countenance. Before, and even
long after the Reformation, Friday was a day of abstinence,
or jour maigre. Immediately after the restoration of king
Charles II. a proclamation was issued, prohibiting all
publicans from dressing any suppers on a Friday.
