Definition of Firehasing

  • Shooting down an idea with all the reasons it cannot possibly work. Like firefighters dousing a flame they extinguish enthusiasm for a new idea. Firehosing can stifle creativity and can swing support against a new idea. Common phrases are It'll never work or It's too hard. Firehosing is easy to do, and when you see it happening you should bring attention to it and suggest constructive criticism or encourage them to give at least one idea why it can work.
         Firehosing new ideas not only squashes an individual's creativity, it prevents an organization from getting and staying competitive.
  • Shooting a scene with video camera aiming vaguely at one thing for a moment before wavering off to inspect something else.
         Firehosing is the sin of not knowing what you want to shoot.
