That separates or distinguishes; -- applied to points or marks
used to distinguish letters of similar form, or different sounds of
the same letter, as, ā, ă, ä, ō, &obreve;,
etc. "Diacritical points." Sir W. Jones.

difficulties, which diacritical marks necessarily throw in the
